Selsey victory part of the learning curve

Selsey FC sealed a must-needed 3-1 victory against lowly Wick at the weekend, but manager Ian Martin cautioned against over optimism.

The game was evenly matched in the first half; Forden scored first for Wick from a set-piece but Selsey responded, playing some impressive football, and the young Oli Hagger equalised on 35 minutes after a nicely worked move by Mark Lee.

In the second half Selsey closed down Wicke's attacks with some good defensive work whilst playing some nice football of their own. Their efforts were rewarded when Hagger scored a second goal on 65 minutes. Jake Lafferty then came off the bench to seal the win with a strike on 75 minutes.

Manager Ian Martin was particularly pleased with the performance of his young players who were given opportunities due to the ongoing suspension of regulars Alun Morey, Graham Morey and Stuart Souter.
"Pat Cripps did very well at centre-forward, Danny Byles was impressive on the right and Oli Hagger on the left going forward." he said. "Jo Gunster also had a very good game."

But Martin commented that the Wick game was one which Selsey should have expected to win. "There will be tougher games," he said, "but it's nice to take a win from a game like this."

Youth will be the order of the day again in this saturday's cup game against Division Two side  Westfield; "the regulars are still out suspended," says Martin, "so I will play a similar side with more players from the reserves being given opportunities.
"Obviously we hope to put together a winning run which will help to build the confidence of the young players."

Martin is realistic however and knows that his young squad will take time to gell.
"I wouldn't see this as a great turning point in the season," Martin commented. "The young players need to come through and progress and we are bound to have successes and failures along the way"
"As long as we can see a progression as we go through the season then that's what we're looking for."
